  • Share

Summary

In our investigation, we found out a picture is doing rounds on social media with a false claim that CAA protesters have vandalized Amar Jawan Memorial. The shared picture was captured during demonstrations in Azad Maidan in 2012.

In the wake protest in various parts of the country against the Citizenship Amendment Act, a picture surfaced on social media with a claim that a youth has vandalized the Amar Jawan Memorial. A Facebook user named Vishesh Pandey shared a picture with a caption that can be roughly translated to, "Is this what a secular country is? These people have no respect for the martyrs, will they respect the Constitution and the Supreme Court? Supporting CAB from your side."

Another user named Sandhya Bhowal shared the same picture with a caption in Bengali, "Can someone, who can kick Amar Jawan Memorial be a citizen of India?? You tell."

The viral picture shows an angry desecrating the Amar Jawan memorial, which is a war memorial dedicated to the fighters of the 1857, First Indian Freedom Struggle, in Azad Maidan Mumbai.

One of our readers requested us to verify the claim.

The truth behind the claim

In our investigation, we found this claim to be false. A reverse image search led us to an article by Mid-day.com that was published in August 2012.

The article had the headline, "Have you seen the rioters who desecrated the Amar Jawan memorial?” and informed that the image was captured by Mid-Day photographer Atul Kamble when some protesters vandalized Amar Jawan Jyoti memorial.

According to a report by NDTV, one of the two alleged rioters, who had vandalized the iconic Amar Jawan memorial during the 11 August 2012 violence, was arrested on 28 August 2012. The person was identified as 19-year-old Abdul Quadir Mohammed Younus Ansari.

In conclusion, a picture is doing rounds on social media with a false claim that CAA protesters have vandalized Amar Jawan Memorial. The shared picture was captured during demonstrations in Azad Maidan in 2012.
